Crossroads Second Chance-South Visual and Performing
Art “is an after school program conceived with the notion
of bridging the gap between education and entertainment.
The after school program will foster a learning environment
that goes beyond the classroom walls, by allowing young
people to be active agents of their own learning and
gives them a voice in determining what and how they
learn. This concept will be used to bridge the gap that
has hindered the growth and productivity in our community.
We use the arts to remove the artificial separation
between the classroom and the real world by the use
of present works that educate on how to solve problems
in the community by journeying inwards of ones self
to find solutions.
We will use the arts in its most useful of forms, as
a catalyst for change in self and therefore promoting
change within the community. We know that our community
is riddled with issues that have become a part of the
psyche of so many of us. Our program will present theatrical
performances, facilitate seminars, workshops, and classes
on media production; voice training instrumental instruction;
graphic artistry, photography, studio engineering and
CD recording that will be powerful enough to bring thought
provoking art that helps to bring these issues to the
forefront. Through the arts we hope to physically, mentally
and spiritually transcend the boundaries that have held
us in our arrested development.
The participants in this program will be introduced
to visual and performing arts that are new to them but
familiar to the lives in which they live. They will
be asked to do various exercises that will allow them
to explore their lives and the environment in which
they encounter to find out the “why” of their existence.
Through a thorough analysis of published text as well
as original writings we hope to develop students that
become critical thinkers, team players and problem solvers.
These attributes are much needed in an every changing
technological society.
Many researchers have proven that students that partake
in the arts tend to do well in their academic classes.
Teachers of theatre witness the many attributes that
theatre has contributed to a student’s success. In a
theatre program students are ask to do things such as;
memorize lines, create character, analyze text, produce
and collaborate with other participants. All of skills
can be easily applied to their academic class. When
we train students to do this daily it becomes easier
for them to do this outside the confines of theatre.
Students become comfortable applying what they have
learned to habitually do these things in their daily
lives. The arts allow the student to become confident
in whom they are as a person and therefore they become
confident in the classroom.
The ultimate goal of any performing art program is always
to put the students in a performance situation so that
they can express to an audience what they have learned
and worked hard toward. This process helps students
to understand the notion of goal setting and what it
means to go through steps in order to be successful.
Also with theatre being a very collaborative effort
students start to see how they must work with one another
and have productive relationships in order to have a
product (performance) that is fulfilling. The phrase
in which we work to instill in our participants is,
“Your product is only as good as your process.” This
can be applied to any walk that they take in their life.
